As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 37 years of experience, I’ve observed how childhood trauma can develop coping mechanisms that may become dysfunctional and evolve into such things as depression, anxiety, codependency, problematic work relationships, substance use, and even addictive patterns of behavior that serve to dull and impair one’s ability to express their needs.
